Organic Gardens

How To Start An Organic Garden Fast

One of the latest crazes that has caught on all over the world, especially in light of global warming and its all of the food contaminations that people have experienced is the hobby of organic gardening. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare the way for a successful and fast-growing organic garden.

For instance, when you buy food at a grocery store that is not organically grown, many synthetic fertilizers are used, as well as pesticides, in order to keep many of the natural predators away from crops including disease, common weeds, and insects that love to devour freshly grown vegetables. Rich dark soil, hopefully full of earthworms, will be a clear sign that your soil is ripe and ready for planting. Vegetables prefer a slightly acidic soil.

If you are truly going to be an organic gardener, you will no doubt encounter another type of invader called weeds. The last thing you should consider is the amount of time that you have in order to maintain your organic garden. Gardening organically can be a very time-consuming process depending upon how much of a garden you would like to maintain.

To Grow or Not To Grow

You can start your bonsai from seed, but be warned, it can take awhile to see your results. Unless you’re starting your bonsai hobby at age 4, being able to see the fruits of your labor will probably not come to reality. While it may be nice to be able to have complete control over your bonsai from the beginning, we have to advise against it.

Seeds take a relatively long time to germinate and become a proper plant to use for bonsai – with preferably a 1/2-1” (1-2cm) diameter trunk (unless you want to do mini-bonsai which are about 4″ high and a totally different practice). Life’s too short to sit, watch and wait for a tree to grow.

Trees used in bonsai aren’t special in any way. They are exactly the same as the trees you see all around you every day. So, essentially, don’t plant your bonsai from seed. Get some more immediate satisfaction by purchasing a young sapling from a nursery or garden center. In doing so, you’ll be able to cultivate not only the tree, but your skills as a bonsai artist as well!

Buy this Product

Bonsai are ordinary trees or plants, not special hybrid dwarfs. Small leafed varieties are most suitable, but essentially any plant can be used, regardless of the size it grows to in the wild. Go to your local nursery or garden store and see if you can find some low-priced plants that have relatively thick trunks and good bonsai potential that you can turn into bonsai through training (pruning, wiring etc.) You can even look around your garden and see if you have any potential bonsai plants there that you could use.

A bought Bonsai is not a bad Bonsai. Only the quality of the tree determines what a good and talented plant is. Not its origin. But the experiences and story of a collected tree will add mental and historical value to a Bonsai that makes it increase its value as a piece of art. In general, select a specimen, that will be tolerant of the stress of being cut, wired, and replanted. Specimens like Cotoneasters, Lonicera and Juniperus, are advisable starters for Shohin growing. They can be found on nurseries in sizes suitable for beginners work.

Make sure that you buy a tree that grows well in your “neck of the woods”. You must be sure that whatever tree you choose will thrive well where you live. Be sure that the plants you consider meet the requirements for good bonsai. Let’s look at some prime species for bonsai tree growing.

Bonsai Styles

It is important for you to remember, as a beginner, that no single bonsai style is the “right” style. Bonsai is meant to be a representation of a tree in nature. Crafting a bonsai masterpiece is tantamount to how YOU view that tree. You are not learning from a bonsai master, you are simply being given instruction on how to create your own bonsai. What you make of it lies simply in your own mind.

You should strive to make your bonsai trees look as natural as possible. Let the tree suggest its own possibilities. If the trunk bends to the right, let it bend that way. Work with it to make it a main feature of your bonsai. You must listen to the tree and hear what it is telling you. Then you will come up with a beautiful creation! Bonsais should simulate age. You should try and project the appearance of maturity in your tree – just in a miniature form. Even if your tree is relatively young, you can groom it so it looks like it has been growing for years and years.

Buy this Product

Two features that give the appearance of age to trees are the caliper of the trunk and the degree of taper of the trunk. The trunks of bonsai (in most styles) will be very wide at the base and taper very smoothly to the top of the tree
There are two general styles of bonsai: the classic (koten) and the informal or ‘comic’ (bunjin). In the former, the trunk of the tree is wider at the base and tapers off towards the top; it is just the opposite in the ‘bunjin’, a style more difficult to master.
When you start a bonsai, always remember that you are working with a living plant. Look carefully at its natural characteristics and you may discern within them a suitable style, or styles. Often you can train a plant into several styles, even if it is basically upright like a beech or elegantly slender like a maple. Even if one style only really suits a particular plant, you still can interpret this in many different ways.

More than anything else you should not try to train a bonsai to grow in a style it is not accustomed to. Study the natural growth patterns of the tree you are going to grow and enhance on the pattern nature gave it.
The five basic bonsai styles are formal upright, informal upright, slanting (or windswept), semi-cascade and cascade. All have their own individual beauty and serenity.

Bonsai History

The history of bonsai is long and storied. Bonsai first appeared in China over a thousand years ago on a very basic scale, known as pun-sai. Pun-sai was the practice of growing single specimen trees in pots. These early specimens displayed little foliage and rugged, gnarled trunks which often looked like animals, dragons and [...]

The history of bonsai is long and storied. Bonsai first appeared in China over a thousand years ago on a very basic scale, known as pun-sai. Pun-sai was the practice of growing single specimen trees in pots. These early specimens displayed little foliage and rugged, gnarled trunks which often looked like animals, dragons and birds. There are a great number of myths and legends surrounding Chinese bonsai. The grotesque or animal-like trunks and root formations are still highly prized today.

With Japan’s adoption of many cultural trademarks of China – bonsai was also taken up, introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333) by means of Zen Buddhism – which at this time was rapidly spreading around Asia. The exact time is debatable, although it is possible that it had arrived in AD 1195 as there appears to be a reference to it in a Japanese scroll attributed to that period.

Once bonsai was introduced into Japan, the art was refined to an extent not yet approached in China. Over time, the simple trees were not just confined to the Buddhist monks and their monasteries, but also later were introduced to be representative of the aristocracy – a symbol of prestige and honor. The ideals and philosophy of bonsai were greatly changed over the years. For the Japanese, bonsai represents a fusion of strong ancient beliefs with the Eastern philosophies of the harmony between man, the soul and nature.

Buy this Product

In an ancient Japanese scroll written in Japan around the Kamakura period, it is translated to say: “To appreciate and find pleasure in curiously curved potted trees is to love deformity”.

Whether this was intended as a positive or negative statement, it leaves us to believe that growing dwarfed and twisted trees in containers was an accepted practice among the upper class of Japan by the Kamakura period. By the fourteenth century bonsai was indeed viewed as a highly refined art form, meaning that it must have been an established practice many years before that time.

Bonsai were brought indoors for display at special times by the ‘Japanese elite’ and became an important part of Japanese life by being displayed on specially designed shelves. These complex plants were no longer permanently reserved for outdoor display, although the practices of training and pruning did not develop until later – the small trees at this time still being taken from the wild.

In the 17th and 18th century, the Japanese arts reached their peak and were regarded very highly. Bonsai again evolved to a much higher understanding and refinement of nature – although the containers used seemed to be slightly deeper than those used today. The main factor in maintaining bonsai was now the removal of all but the most important parts of the plant. The reduction of everything just to the essential elements and ultimate refinement was very symbolic of the Japanese philosophy of this time.

At around this time, bonsai also became commonplace to the general Japanese public – which greatly increased demand for the small trees collected from the wild and firmly established the art form within the culture and traditions of the country.

Over time, bonsai began to take on different styles, each which varied immensely from one another. Bonsai artists gradually looked into introducing other culturally important elements in their bonsai plantings such as rocks, accent plants, and even small buildings and people which is known as the art of bon-kei. They also looked at reproducing miniature landscapes in nature – known as sai-kei which further investigated the diverse range of artistic possibilities for bonsai.

Finally, in the mid-19th century, after more than 230 years of global isolation, Japan opened itself up to the rest of the world. Word soon spread from travelers who visited Japan of the miniature trees in ceramic containers which mimicked aged, mature, tall trees in nature. Further exhibitions in London, Vienna and Paris in the latter part of the century – especially the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 opened the world’s eyes up to bonsai.

Due to this phenomenal upsurge in the demand for bonsai, the now widely expanding industry and lack of naturally-forming, stunted plants led to the commercial production of bonsai by artists through training young plants to grow to look like bonsai. Several basic styles were adopted, and artists made use of wire, bamboo skewers and growing techniques to do this – allowing the art to evolve even further. The Japanese learned to capitalize on the interest in this art form very quickly – opening up nurseries dedicated solely to grow, train and then export bonsai trees.

Different plants were now being used to cater for worldwide climates and to produce neater foliage and more suitable growth habits. Bonsai techniques such as raising trees from seed or cuttings and the styling and grafting of unusual, different or tender material onto hardy root stock were further developed.

Bonsai has now evolved to reflect changing tastes and times – with a great variety of countries, cultures and conditions in which it is now practiced.

In Japan today, bonsai are highly regarded as a symbol of their culture and ideals. The New Year is not complete unless the tokonoma – the special niche in every Japanese home used for the display of ornaments and prized possessions – is filled with a blossoming apricot or plum tree. Bonsai is no longer reserved for the upper-class, but is a joy shared by executive and factory worker alike.

The Japanese tend to focus on using native species for their bonsai – namely pines, azaleas and maples (regarded as the traditional bonsai plants). In other countries however, people are more open to other opinions.

The evolution of bonsai over the past two centuries is truly amazing. Perhaps it is symbolic of how small the world is getting as people from Europe to the United States and even in Greenland are exploring bonsai as a hobby.

And now it’s your turn! First, let’s explore styles of bonsai.

Floral offerings with fresh cut flowers can convey a whole lot of things ranging from good luck to love and condolences. You should always take good care of the flowers that you buy. If you intend placing them in a flower vase, then you need to cut the ends of the stems before you place them in a vase filled with water. A fresh cut flower is known last much longer in lukewarm water, rather than in cold water. It is always preferable that you do not place the fresh cut flower vase near any direct source of heat such as ovens, radiators or strong lights. You should also not commit the mistake of keeping fruits and fresh cut flowers together. Go for bright colored flowers to add that dash of color if your room is sparsely furnished. Zinnias, Roses, Chrysanthemums, Tube roses are some of the other popular flowers that make for great flower arrangements.

The history of FTD florists goes back to the year 1910, whereupon over a dozen American florists decided to serve each others’ out of town customers by exchanging orders for flowers through telegraph. Then there is the floral business, which sells software, computer services, and freshly cut flowers to affiliated websites and florists all across the nation.
For Your Flower Delivery

Flowers have always had a strange power over us. Of course, it helps that various flowers have different meanings. In fact, the act of presenting someone with flowers stems from the Victorian era when flowers doubled up as messengers. In the past, so long as we wanted to send flowers to someone staying close by, sending flowers was a snap. Online flower delivery has made it easy for us to deliver fresh cut flowers in faraway places. In the past, you had to depend on the agents of FTD (Florist Transworld Delivery) services to deliver your flowers. Then, you would pay and pray that the agency delivered the flowers you selected in a favorable condition. All you have to do is identify a good online flower directory service. You may search according to the place of delivery, time of service, type of flowers and occasion. Local flower shops also have a great amount of flexibility when it comes to the time of delivery. In case of emergencies, you can spot local flower shops that would be willing to deliver flowers on the same day. This would be impossible with international services that deliver flowers overnight. So, before you select local flower shops, see whether they accommodate your needs. Local flower shops are your best choice when sending flowers to remote places. These shops will have seasonal flowers in stock, so you need not pay extra for exotic flowers.

Tips For Buying Valentines Flowers

Don’t Wait–Valentines Flowers are Selling Out Fast! It’s almost Valentines Day, and you better start thinking of ordering those Valentines flowers for your wife or sweetheart! All women love flowers, so order a bouquet for your favorite neighbor, your cousin, your niece, teacher, sister, mom. . Just order Valentines Flowers for everyone you know. Why should you send flowers for Valentine’s Day? There is no better way of showing someone you care than giving Valentine flowers.

To send a Valentines flower is a loving act. What kind of flowers should you give? Choosing the right flower can be a little frustrating, but don’t despair! Some people believe that roses are the only flower that will do as Valentines flowers. Roses are the ultimate romantic flower. No flower says, “I love you!” the way a rose does. For that reason, they are the most popular flower for that special day. Red roses are the most traditional Valentines flower, but pink, white, and yellow are also given. Daisies are the perfect Valentines flower for the sweet, caring, sentimental type, while a lily bouquet would be the perfect choice for someone who is always sincere.

What is your Valentine’s floral personality? You can still get a nice bouquet of Valentines Day flowers for under $30. Where should you buy the flowers? Bouquets ordered online are designed and delivered by local florists, with same-day delivery available.

Say “I love you!” with flowers on Valentine’s Day.

How To Choose An Online Florist

Tips For A Smart Customer

The world population may be divided into two types – those who want to buy flowers and those who don’t want to buy flowers.

If you belong to the category of people who want to buy flowers, do read on. If you belong to the category of people who don’t want to buy flowers, your time would be better spent watching a James Bond movie or reading an article on global warming.

Let me slightly digress to say that the article on global warming is recommended more vigorously than the Bond movie, unless, of course, the movie tells you how to make a better world.

Coming to the topic

As an intelligent customer, you should have a reasonably clear idea of what you want to buy. Being sure of what you want to buy significantly reduces the time you spend for searching for the products. When you are planning to buy flowers to be sent to someone, there are two important things you must never forget – the occasion and the recipient.

You must have heard it a one-hundred and seventeen times that the flowers that are associated with Mother’s Day are carnations and the flowers that are associated with Valentine’s Day are roses. It is occasionally nice to surprise your recipient with gifts that are not strictly traditional – for instance, gifting your beloved with lilies on Valentine’s Day and gifting your mother with hyacinths or irises on Mother’s Day.

When you want to do business with a website, you should be sure that their security and privacy measures are faultless because you definitely don’t want your credit card number and your personal details to be stolen.

Ensure that information is transmitted over a highly secure 128 bit or 256 bit encrypted connection. Go through the company’s privacy policy to confirm that your personal information will not be disclosed to third parties.

Do not purchase from florists who do not offer good customer care. Find out what their policies are regarding a delayed delivery or a wrong delivery. Good online florists have a customer care department that can be contacted via email or phone. The ideal policy regarding unsatisfactory service is ‘refund and replace’.

Some other questions that you should consider

Q: How long has the florist been around?

A: The longer, the better.

Q: Are the customers who have done business with them happy with the service?

A: The greater the number of happy customers, the better.

Q: Do they have any specialties?

A: Explore those products for price and quality. They might be worth buying.

Q: What is the mode of delivery?

A: Plus if delivered by florists, minus if delivered by courier.
Last but not least, a serious practical concern is affordability. As a discerning customer, you have to go through different florists’ catalogs in order to get a clear picture of the comparative prices of similar products

“Plant Trees”. ‘The right tree in the right place’ is a phrase worth remembering. Trees are the same. When considering what tree to plant, think first about what benefits you want from the tree. Large shade trees should be planted 45 feet from overhead utility wires. If your site is close to utility lines, consider planting trees that remain small, or plant shrubs. Whenever there is adequate room, consider planting large shade trees. The benefits from shade trees greatly outweigh those of small ornamental trees. Big trees also increase property values to the tune of about $1,000 per tree. To plant the right tree in the right place, do your research. The shape of a tree is more complex. Shade trees turn that pyramid upside-down. How much shade does the tree prefer? Still other trees, such as dogwood, strongly prefer shade. Large trees remove 60 to 70 times more pollution than small trees.

What You Need To Know When Planting A Tree

Every year more than one million trees are planted on public and private properties throughout North America, these are not the trees are not planted as a part of a reforestation project, they are the trees that we use for personal and community ambience. Of these trees, less than 50 percent will survive more than two years.

Shock From Transplanting:

The greatest transplanting shock comes from the loss of the tree’s root system that occurs when the tree is dug up at the tree farm. Placing the tree in shock makes it much more vulnerable to disease, insects, drought and other potential life threatening situations. The transplant shock lasts until the root system is fully replaced to the level it was prior to being removed from the tree farm. Most trees that die after being transplanted do so during the period of time prior to restoration of the full root system. Although there is no method of transplanting that will guaranty that a tree will not die, regular care and good gardening practices, for a three-year period following the transplant, will definitely improve the trees likely hood of survival.

Transplanting and Tree Roots:

A healthy trees root system grows horizontally, even the main structural roots grow horizontally from the base of the trunk rather than vertically. Ask anyone who has tried to plant flowers near the base of a tree. The root system will generally extend to an area well beyond that of the visible branch coverage. The thicker roots which are located close to the tree trunk do not absorb water and nutrients, those roots are the fine roots and they are usually located within a four to ten inch depth below surface grade. For proper tree growth there must be a balance between the foliage of the tree and the root system.

In most cases when a tree is removed from its original location more than 95 percent of the root system is left in the ground. That leaves only five percent of the system to supply 100 percent of the required water and nutrients to the tree. Hence, the trees root system cannot supply water at the rate that the crown is capable of dissipating it. Without the required water, the tree cannot produce an adequate supply of carbohydrates, and it makes the tree susceptible to disease, resulting in the death of the tree.

Regeneration of Root Systems For Transplanted Trees:

Regeneration of the root system is the primary key to ensure that the tree does not die due to the transplanting. It is critical that the visible part of the tree remains healthy during the period of time that it is regenerating its root system. Initially the root system will receive the necessary carbohydrates to induce growth from those stored in the trunk and branches of the tree. In order to ensure that the tree remains healthy after transplanting it is of critical importance that the tree continues to produce adequate levels of carbohydrates throughout the growing season, and even more important during the first year after the transplanting has occurred.

Some people believe that the best way to ensure a healthy tree after transplanting is to prune the tree so that the root system does not have to provide as much water and nutrients. This is an incorrect procedure! If you leave the tree as delivered it will aid in supporting the growth of the root system. The only pruning that should take place is cutting away any damaged or broken tree branches or limbs. To assist the root system you must continue to supply water as ambient water will be insufficient to promote a healthy root system.

There is no defined time frame for the root system to re-establish itself as it dependent on the size of the root ball, soil conditions, and climate. Bigger trees loose more root system when originally removed than smaller trees. Hence, it will take longer for a big tree to create its root system than a smaller tree, providing all other factors remain constant.

Tests have indicated that for a tree with a one inch diameter trunk it may take from four to seven years for the root system to be back to 100 percent efficiency, depending on the type of tree, climate, soil and moisture. A ten-inch tree could take as long as 15 years to replace its entire root system.

The growth of the root system and new upper tree growth is dramatically reduced post transplant. You may however notice a lot of new twigs the first year after transplanting. This is because the buds were formed prior to the tree being removed from its original location. Following the first year, the amount of new upper tree growth will be directly related to the growth of the root system. This provides a visual indication of how root growth is proceeding – few new buds, little root growth.

Planting Techniques and On-Going Care:

The tree you choose and the location you are going to place it must be a match. Picking the wrong tree for the sites soil conditions will mean that the root system may never fully regenerate itself. If you choose the right tree for the location and provide the proper care, there is no reason to believe that the tree will not survive and grow. Tree type, soil conditions, and care will definitely reduce the likely hood of death due to insect attack and disease.

Planting:

Carefully consider the size of the hole needed for the tree you are about to plant. Most individual have a tendency to dig a hole that is correct in depth but incorrect in width. The width of the hole should be a minimum of three times the diameter of the root ball. If you are planting in an area that is always wet, the tree can be planted so that a third of the root ball is above the final grade. By doing this the majority of the root system will remain above soil that is water saturated.

Use the soil removed from the hole to fill in the area around the root ball. If you are adding an organic soil additive then the area that this new mixture fills should be large enough for a 3 to 5 year root growth.

Watering:

Watering seems to be the area that confuses the vast majority of individuals. There appears to be many different theories on the amount of water needed and how often to apply that water. This could be because depending on where you live soil and the associated climate will make a dramatic difference to the amount of watering needed. Soil moisture is critical to your new tree’s survival, to little and it will die of drought, to much and you will saturate the soil, removing the space required for oxygen. The consensus of opinion is that a transplanted tree needs one-inch of water a week for the first year. It is best to check with your local nursery for exact recommendations for your area.

Mulching:

Three to four inches of wood or bark chips placed over the area that has been excavated for the tree will maintain the moisture in the soil and control soil temperature swings. Mulch will also inhibit the growth of weeds and grass, both of which compete for the moisture and nutrients in the soil. It is not recommended that you replace any sod that was removed to dig the hole nor is it wise to plant flowers at the tree base during the first year.

Sympathy Flowers That Last Longer

When it comes to a funeral, there’s nothing worse than flowers that are wilting around the casket during the ceremony. Some of the most beautiful flowers are quite delicate, but here are a few guidelines to help you choose the perfect funeral flowers.

Buy this Product

Thicker Flowers:

Thin, delicate petals lose moisture quickly and will wilt away before the memorial service is over. Instead, when choosing funeral flowers, look for ones with thicker, fleshy petals that can withstand heat and won’t wilt for quite some time. Some good choices within this range include carnations, marigolds, and dahlias, as well as lilies, which are a very elegant sympathy flower.

Full Flowers:

Often you’ll find that fuller flowers don’t wilt as quickly. Flowers like carnations and daisies tend to last a lot longer than the average cut flower and you can expect these beautiful blooms to be cheaper as well. They can be found in a variety of colors, making these standard issue flowers the ideal ones for a small funeral bouquet. A gathering of dark red or blue carnations or a handful of darker colored daisies can be the best flower arrangement to remember a friend or loved one.

Flowers to Avoid for Funeral Arrangements

There are some flowers that are simply not up to staying perky and fresh for long. Flowers to avoid include the more delicate flowers such as forget-me-nots and roses. Sympathy flowers for a funeral is delicate business.
