How to Make a Flower Bouquet

A bouquet is really just a bunch of flowers tied together. A formal bouquet is a beautiful and skillful preparation of flowers, using wire to give strength and control in creating the effect. Flowers at all stages of growth should be used.

Choose your favorite flowers and stay within your means. Special florist’s wire comes in different gauges. Over wiring makes a bouquet look stiff and heavy. There are two types of wires; stubb wires and silver reel wire. The stubb wire acts like a false stem and looks like long thin needles. Silver reel wire is used for binding flowers together and preparing them for the stubb wire.

Flowers must be pierced through the head with silver reel wire, the wire end twisted together to form two legs about 3 inches long. These legs will be used later to attach the flower to the false stem. Different flowers are pierced in different places, roses through the lower bud, carnation petals are wired together to make a blossom. Experiment with different flowers until you achieve your desired effect. As you create your bouquet the larger flowers should be in the center and the smaller ones around the periphery. Place your bouquet in a box in a cool place until your ceremony.
